Workshop Series: Rings to Rule Them All
Thursdays 6-9pm: May 17 - June 7
Instructor: Anne Holman
In this four-session class, we will explore numerous foundational jewelry techniques to create three types of rings. Skills to be introduced include: sawing, filing, texturing techniques, riveting, forming, beginning and advanced soldering applications, use of a rolling mill, bezel stone setting and various finishing techniques. These skills will be used to create three rings in this particular class, and will be techniques that students can apply to other future projects and classes.
Techniques will be taught demonstrating how to build each type of ring, but the overall design of each piece is open to interpretation and the inspiration of the student. Each skill learned can be applied in various ways in creating each of the rings. Instructor will guide students in problem solving their design ideas.
Each student will leave with three completed sterling silver rings:
1. A textured and milled stackable sterling band ring,
2. A sterling ring with layered riveted hand cut shapes in textured copper or brass,
3. A sterling bezel set ring with sweat soldered and hand cut details. Each student is provided with a cabochon stone suitable for this project, with options to upgrade the stone type.
All materials and tools will be provided. Options will be available to upgrade various components.
This is a beginning level class, no prerequisite experience is required, but any prior experience will be built upon.
This workshop is for students aged 16+.
Class size is limited to 6 students.
Class meets 3 hours each week for 4 weeks. Attendance is required at all four classes as techniques build upon each other and can't be re-demonstrated due to time constraints.
Please allow extra time for parking, as it does get busy on Grandview Avenue in the evenings and weekends. Street parking can be found along Grandview Avenue. There is also a large parking lot directly across the street from The Smithery, located behind Spagio and Staufs. Additionally, you may park in the lot behind The Grandview Carryout at the corner of Grandview & 3rd, or the parking lot between the Post Office and Figlio. The PNC Bank on West 1st Ave is public parking after 6pm.
Due to the small class sizes and demand for each seat, if you are unable to attend a class for any reason, please notify us as soon as possible to allow another student to register for the class.
Please note, we cannot offer refunds for student cancellations, but we can offer credit to be applied toward a future workshop based on the timeframe in which you have notified us of your cancellation.
Workshop cancellations are decided three days before the start date. In the rare event that The Smithery must cancel a workshop due to insufficient enrollment, currently enrolled students will have the option to have the entire class fee refunded or held as credit for future workshops.
