Tuesday, December 3
Prerequisite: Students must have completed our Metalsmithing Foundation: Level One class or have equivalent experience. Students should have a basic understanding of using a jeweler's saw for sawing and piercing, using hand files, drilling, riveting, and have had an introduction to basic silver torch soldering.
Level Two classes are designed to build on the foundational metalsmithing skills you have learned in our Level One class and will serve as a prerequisite for Level Three classes offered at our studio.
The first three sessions of this class will be technique heavy as each student creates a number of samples using a variety of techniques. Students will build on their soldering and cold connection skills in this course, while learning more complex fabrication techniques.
The following two sessions of this class will be studio time with guided help as students work on an independent project of their design, combining techniques they have learned. Students will leave class with finished pieces and samples.
Students will learn techniques such as sweat soldering, pick soldering, handmade chain and clasp construction, wire forging, cold connections, flex shaft and more. We will discuss safe practices for working in the studio and can advise on setting up a studio at home.
Attendence to the first three classes is mandatory as these classes will be full of technical instruction, demos and practice that cannot be repeated. Please note that we are not able to provide make up classes.
An optional Open Studio class will be available for students of this course on December 5th from 6:30-9:30 for a fee of $35. This is additional time for students to continue working on their independent projects. Tools will be available for use, and instructors will be there to assist. New techniques will not be taught during open studio date. You may choose to sign up for the open studio at the time of registration, or you may opt to sign up for the open studio date after the course begins.
