Wednesday, October 2
Wednesday, October 9
Wednesday, October 16
Prerequisite: No experience needed.
This course is designed to give students a foundational understanding of basic metalsmithing skills and will serve as a prerequisite for Level Two classes offered at our studio.
The first three classes will be technique heavy as each student creates a riveted silhouette pendant/keychain from copper or brass and a sterling band ring.
The following two classes will be studio time with guided help as students work on an independent project of their design, combining techniques they have learned. Students will leave class with finished pieces and samples.
Students will learn to use a jewelers saw, hand files, texturing with hammers, cold connections using rivets, forming tools, metal stamping, bench tools and more. Students will get an introduction to using flex shaft tools and basic silver torch soldering. We will discuss safe practices for working in the studio and can advise on setting up a studio at home.
Attendence to the first three classes is mandatory as these classes will be full of technical instruction, demos and practice that cannot be repeated. Please note that we are not able to provide make up classes.
An optional Open Studio class will be available for students of this course on October 23 from 6:30-9:30 for a fee of $35. This is additional time for students to continue working on their independent projects. Tools will be available for use, and instructors will be there to assist. New techniques will not be taught during open studio date. You may choose to sign up for the open studio at checkout, at the time of registration, or you may opt to attend the open studio date after the course begins.
